Thomas Costello takes us around the beautiful Island of Arranmore. From the German/Austrian couple who searched Ireland to find the right place for their retirement, to the tragic story of the Arranmore disaster 75 years ago.
The first programme in our series will be broadcast this St Patrick’s Day, 17 March at 6pm on Highland Radio. Listen Live or on FM in Donegal
Rutland Island, on the way to Arranmore Island, the view from the boat. Some interesting architecture on these wee islands.
The ferry leaves Arranmore for the mainland at Burtonport. This was taken from Andrew’s house who we interviewed for the programme. The Ferry leaves 8 times a day all year round and can hold several cars but you need to book in advance.
Arranmore Island is our stop this week. These fiddlers played a few tunes for us but it’s a busy place and we had a bit of stopping and starting to do. This was taken in Phil Ban’s bar.
Fanad Head is a beautiful part of Donegal. We spoke to John Dorian, a local Historian and retired schoolteacher about the area. Here he is outside the Lodge Hotel talking to Danny on a great day in April. You can just see the sea poking up from behind the houses. More of that later
Carrick in the south of Donegal is our stop tomorrow. These are the mountains we’ll travel through. (The pic’s from our recce in February.) Let’s hope it’s nice weather.

The accordion orchestra’s a uniquely Irish sound. Up in the shed there’s no waiting around to be asked to dance. Listen out for some great playing in our show in the Autumn.
